Splashup - Online Image Editing Tool

OK, I know that Adobe is releasing their version of Photoshop as an online tool. However, I came across this online image editor that has many of the most common functionalities of Photoshop. Splashup runs as an Adobe Flash application, so as long as your browser has the required plug-in (and I’m sure it does) you can edit and manipulate your photos. You can upload images from your computer, get them from the web, or browse your Flickr, Facebook, Picasa etc. profiles for photos. You can even import an image from a webcam! xooAnalytics v1.2.1 Wordpress Plugin Released

I’ve updated the xooAnalytics plugin that I’ve developed.  It will now track http, https, and ftp absolute links as well as email links.  The next version will have support for tracking downloadable files.  Take a look at the xooAnalytics wordpress plugin here.

KGen :: Firefox Add-ons

This is a great add-on for firefox/flock that I’ve been using that allows me to see the keyword density of a web page. It works in the sidebar of the browser. You basically click the ‘Scan it!’ button and the extension will scan the contents of the page and rank the keywords used on that page by how many times they repeat and will weight the relevance of that keyword on the page. You can also see how many of the keywords are sandwiched in <strong></strong>, <hx></hx>, <title></title>, etc tags.

As a developer, this helps me to pinpoint areas for improvement on my pages. I don’t directly control the content on most of the sites I develop, so this way I can at least determine where I can get the most bang for the buck as far as which keywords to use. It also will allow me to go back to my clients and show them how they can change their copywriting to further benefit their site.

Any ideas on other tools to help with SEO, let me know!

I’ve decided to consolidate my websites and make this blog available from my home page URL. I have the URL http://pedsone.com 301 redirected with an Apache .htaccess file, so shouldn’t lose any search engine love.

xooAnalytics Wordpress Plugin

I’ve developed a quick and easy little wordpress plugin that will add Google Analytics tracking code to any absolute links in a post/page. You can go to the plugin home page at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/xooanalytics/. It basically just searches the post content for a regular expression match for a link. If the link contains an absolute URL, then it adds the urchinTracker() function as an onclick event. When a user clicks on that link, the urchinTracker function saves that click as a hit on that link.

The code appends ‘/external/’ to a link and ‘/mailto/’ to an email address, so you can filter all of your hits with the ‘contains /external/’ or ‘contains /mailto/’ section and you’ll only see results to external links from your posts/pages.

Requirements, you must have the Google Analytics code just below the opening <body> tag of your page, rather than at the bottom of the page before the closing </body> tag. Otherwise, your page will throw a JavaScript error. Read the rest of this entry »

This is a great resource to show your clients when they ask for a new website or a revamped website. Many times, clients will just say that they want to be in the “top 10″ of the search engines. As a developer, you can do many things to help a site achieve higher search engine ranking. However, unless you also generate the content for a site, you really are limited to what you can do to really achieve those top spots. Below is a video of Stephanie Leffler, Senior VP of Network Solutions talking about some basic tips to get listed highly in the SERPs. She explains how content is the king in placements. Getting your clients to maintain a blog or write individual articles regarding their products is a tedious task. However, it’s essential to good Search Engine Rankings. Take a look at the video!

DOM Tutorial

Manipulating the DOM is not a very difficult task, and with the increase in AJAX use, more developers are taking advantage of this technique. The object is to be able to update the page on the client side. However, be sure that any actions that are taking place are not hidden from users without JavaScript or users using accessibility devices. Here is a very easy to understand tutorial I found on YouTube that explains the basic properties and methods of scripting the DOM. This also makes it extremely easy to create a DOM Cheat Sheet with the properties and methods mentioned.

Free online tutorials are the way most of us tend to learn new tasks. Some tutorials are easy, some are hard. You just need to be able to search through them quickly to decipher what is worth your time and what isn’t. Take a look at Tutorial Cover, it’s a great list of available tutorials. They’re listed by categories, so you can go directly where you need to. You can see how they’ve been rated by others and what difficulty level they are.

XooMapper v1.2 - Expandable Sitemap (Search Engine Friendly)

Creating a site map for a site is a very useful addition for your visitors. Users will get to see a hierarchical structure of your site at a quick glance and can then visit pages more easily. They’re also very useful for opening all of your links to search engines. The problem with site maps is they’re hard to navigate if your site has many, many pages. However, allowing users to see a collapsed version and be able to expand sections as needed could help them navigate without becoming overwhelmed.
