xooxia.pngProgressive Enhancement and Development Solutions is a quick blog that I’ve published to allow a forum to discuss emerging web technologies as they pertain to my work. I currently work a full-time development job at a local university, however, have been carrying on various freelance projects as well. I believe it to be important to share findings and research with other developers. This collaboration has been and will continue to be a driving force in clean, accessible design and development.

So, why the name Progressive Enhancement and Development Solutions? Well, for one, SEO (Search engine optimization). Other developers searching for content on the web would be searching for topics that pertain to today’s most common technologies. Although progressive enhancement is not necessarily a technology, it does encompass many of the technologies that are currently hot topics in the industry. For one, the resurgence of progressive enhancement in development has revived and rejuvenated a client-side language that has never really gained the respect it deserves: JavaScript. JavaScript, if not being used more now than in years past, is now being aggressively developed in conjunction with the hottest topic of all in web development, AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). Scripts have started popping up all over the web, along will full blown frameworks to take advantage of the user’s client-side capabilities. However, all competent developers understand that these technologies should be used only to enhance content, and not to be used as the main avenue to get to the content. Web accessibility is a priority, as well as clean standards based code that allows a variety of clients to access the content, along with mobile devices and screen readers.

I’ll be discussing these topics and others throughout the course of my work. Feel free to comment and leave your thoughts.
